Established in 1965, this interesting museum contains more than 26,000 items. Apart from those relating to Portuguese culture, there is a particular emphasis on African collections and the cultures of Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mali, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon, as well as further representative collections of the Amazonian Indians, Indonesia, Timor and Macao. Many items may well predate the arrival of the Portuguese in Africa. Part of the African art collection has toured the United States.
