Opened in 1905 and housed in what was formerly the riding school of the Belem Palace, this museum is claimed to be one of the most visited in the city. It was created by Queen Amelia to house the extensive coach collection owned by the Portuguese royal family and nobility. The exhibits date from the 16th to the 19th centuries and the collection includes the coach used by King Phillip II of Portugal to travel from Spain in 1619. The museum also includes a collection of model cars donated in1986.
