The National Archaeology Museum, founded in 1893 by the archaeologist José Leite de Vasconelos, has occupied the west wing of the Jerónimos Monastery since 1903. The museum is the most important archaeological research centre in Portugal and has a collection of exhibits from across the country. At the entrance there are two granite statues of Lusitanian Warriors, dating from the 1st century AD and brought from Northern Portugal. The treasury contains a rich collection of archaic gold work featuring some magnificently worked bracelets, Celtic earrings, and other jewellery. The museum regularly houses temporary exhibitions.
