Opened in 1994, the music museum occupies two adapted floors of the west wing of the Alto dos Moinhos metro station. Apart from the collection of musical instruments, there are printed and manuscript documents, a sound archive of more than 9,000 items, ceramics, drawings, sculpture, photographs, prints, and paintings. The instrument collection is one of the richest in Europe and includes the Boisselot et Fils piano, which Franz Liszt brought from France in 1845, an 18th century Eichentopf oboe (one of only two in the world) and the Antonio Stradivari cello, which belonged to, and was played by, King Luís.
