The Museum of Sacred Art adjoins the São Roque church and is housed in the former Misericórdia old people’s home and orphanage. Well known for it’s collection of Baroque silver, it exhibits 16th and 17th century sacred art and many other gold and silver religious artefacts. One exhibit, a pair of silver and bronze torch holders weighing about 380 kg, is one of the most elaborate in Europe. A collection of priest’s vestments with gold thread woven through them is of particular note.
