The building housing this museum, which is also simply known as the Museum of Nazaré, was donated to the state in 1968 by a local benefactor Amadeu Gaudêncio. Built in the early 20th century, it had been the summer residence of Dr Joaquim Manso, writer, journalist and founder of the daily newspaper, the ‘Diário de Lisboa’. The museum was opened in 1976 and is devoted to regional history and culture. Exhibits include archaeological finds, records, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, traditional costumes and many other items of local interest. It also covers maritime ethnology and has a display of traditional fishing boats.
