Since 1884 the museum has been housed in a palace originally built in 1690 by Count Alvor. Known as the ‘house of the green windows’ from the original colour of its shutters, it contains 14th to 20th century works by artists such as Raphael, Durer, and Bosch and also houses a collection of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman sculptures, fine silver and gold work, ceramics and porcelain, amongst many other interesting items. One of the most famous paintings is Durer’s Temptation of St Anthony. This is one of Lisbon’s most important museums.
