José Cercas, renowned artist, was born in Aljezur and bequeathed his house and art collection to the town on his death. His house is now a museum showcasing a collection of paintings from the painter himself and from other prominent Portuguese artists. The museum has countless antique objects, wonderful pieces of furniture in various styles and an eclectic selection of porcelain. The artist’s studio is open for viewing. The museum garden has an excellent view of the castle, the surrounding countryside and the town.
