The Manuel Cabanas Museum, housed in the Cultural Centre of Vila Real de Santo António, showcases the work of Portugal’s greatest wood engraver of the 20th century, Manuel Cabanas (1902–95). A wide range of his work is exhibited, from ink-relief images of politicians, statesmen, writers and musicians, through to views of everyday rural life. Apart from being home to the biggest collection in the country of wood engravings, the museum also houses more than 200 stones that were once used as part of the lithographic process to print designs on tins of tuna and sardines.
