In Lajes do Pico the Whalers’ Museum is installed in three old houses where the whalers used to keep their boats and an old blacksmith’s forge, a set of buildings dating from the 19th century that still preserve many of their original features. Also on display in the museum is a collection of the tools and equipment used in whale hunting, as well as carved and engraved pieces made from the bones and teeth of whales, a popular form of art known as “scrimshaw”.
