The Museu da Pedra is devoted to the history and use of the famous local limestone known as Pedra d’ Ançã. The museum, which opened in 2001, is housed in a restored 18th century building. It covers the methods of rock extraction and displays paleontological findings from nearby quarries. The Ançã stone made this region one of the most important centres of Renaissance sculpture and is associated with celebrated sculptors including João de Ruão, Nicolau Chanterenne, Odart, Tomé Velho, Teixeira Lopes and others. The museum also holds temporary exhibitions and has an auditorium and area of plastic art studios.
