The market town of Murça lies about 30 km southwest of Mirandela. The town’s symbol can be found in the gardens of the main square in the form of an Iron Age granite pig, the ‘Porca de Murça’. Believed to have been linked to fertility rites it now suffers the indignity at election time of being painted in the winning party’s colours. The Misericórdia chapel on the main street has an attractive early Baroque façade which features vine-embellished columns. Murça is in the heart of the Douro wine region and is famous for its honey, goat’s cheese and sausages.
