The municipal square in Funchal is an imposing and attractive place. The black and white lava paving stones perfectly match the surrounding whitewashed buildings, with their black lava stone window surrounds and their ochre-coloured roof tiles. On the south side of the square is the former Bishop’s Palace, the City hall lies on the north east and the Colégio Church on the north west. There is a fountain and obelisk with a globe and cross on top, in the centre of the square.
