The neo-classical City Hall in the Municipal Square dates from 1865-1880; a fire in 1863 having severely damaged the previous building. The triangular tympanum has the city coat of arms in the centre and allegorical figures from 1882 by Anatole Calmels. The Portuguese Republic was established here in 1910. The square is surrounded by Pombaline buildings, including the Appeals Court, built after the great earthquake in 1755. The elegant 18th century pillory (pelourinho), a symbol of municipal authority, stands in the centre of the square. In the form of a spiral, it is crowned with a bronze armillary sphere.
