The Municipal Garden, opposite the Municipal Theatre, covers an area of 8,300 square metres in the centre of Funchal. Also known as Queen Amélia Garden, it was first laid out in 1880 on the site of the former São Francisco Convent, whose coat of arms can still be seen on a stone on one of the lawns. This is restful place with trees and plants from Madeira and around the world, the most important of which are labelled. There is a lake and a stream with fish, swans and ducks and an auditorium for cultural purposes erected in 1992.
