The Municipal Library was opened in 2005 and is named after the famous poetess Florbela Espanca (1894-1930), who lived in Matosinhos in the last years of her life before committing suicide. The building was designed by the celebrated Portuguese local architect Alcinho Soutinho (b 1930), who also designed the equipment and furniture. His other projects include the Matosinhos Municipal Offices and the remodelling of the Aveiro Museum. The Library was built with the UNESCO Public Library Manifesto objectives in mind and aims to satisfy the needs of all citizens, regardless their age, race, sex, religion, nationality, language or social status.
