The museum complex of Mértola consists of archaeological findings and excavations. The nucleus of Islamic art is the most important in Portugal. It consists of various objects (pottery, glassware, metalwork, coins) dating from the period of Islamic domination. The collection is housed in the old cellars of the noblemen of the House of Braganza. There are other important museum locations including the Palaeochristian basilica, the remnants of an ancient Christian church, with a large collection of inscribed Palaeochristian tombstones. It had an active cult lasting from the 5th to the 8th century. Also worth seeing are the excavations of a Roman house found under the Municipality building.
