The 16th century Golegã mother church is situated in the town’s main square and is dedicated to Our Lady of the Conception. The design is attributed to Diogo Boitac, famous for his work on the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, and the church is particularly noted for its exquisite entrance portal which exhibits the Manueline style of architecture. Features include the twisted columns, the rope motifs and the delicate tracery of the frieze. Much of the internal decoration, including the azulejos, dates from restoration work in the 18th century. Note the 16th century pillory in front of the church.
