The Manuel Bivar Garden is the perfect starting point for a tour of Mouraria, the old Moorish quarter. This area is rich with buildings charting the different stages of Faro’s history. These include many houses whose facades are ennobled by carved stonework, bay windows and impressive architecture typical of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Of these, the Palácio Belmarço and the Banco de Portugal building are particularly noteworthy, as is the Cafe Aliança, the oldest cafe in Faro and a place of strong cultural traditions.
