This monument was unveiled on the 25th April 2005, Portugal’s Freedom Day, 31 years after the Carnation Revolution which spelled the end of the Salazar regime. It is dedicated to Freedom, Democracy and Anti-fascist Resistance and stands in the centre island of Setubal’s main thoroughfare. The sculptor was the celebrated José Aurélio and the monument comprises three tetrapods placed vertically on top of each other, symbolizing resistance. A human element is created by the use of ropes and chains at the top. The inscription commemorates those who fought, and still fight, against fascism for democracy and freedom
