Originally built in 1940 with perishable materials, the monument was rebuilt in concrete in1960 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator. It stands 52 metres high shaped like a ship’s bow and projects out above the water across the Tagus. Henry the Navigator stands at the top of the prow; behind him on both sides of the monument are the statues of 30 other great people of the era; a carved sword stretches the full height of the monument. The architect was Cottinelli Telmo and Leopoldo de Almeida was the sculptor responsible for the statues.
