Located in the centre of the Praça do Império, close to the Catholic University, the Monument to the Colonists was inaugurated in 1934. The work of Portuguese sculptors Sousa Caldas and Alferes Alberto Ponce de Castro, it was created for the 1934 Colonial Exhibition. The Portuguese coat of arms is at the top of the obelisk, whilst at the base are six sculptures representing key players in the establishment of the colonies. These are women, soldiers, missionaries, traders, farmers and doctors.
