Close to Rio de Moinhos is the Monument of Montes Claros, which stands on the hilltop of the Herdade de Travassos. The monument commemorates the last great struggle waged in the Restoration Wars, which was the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Montes Claros, in 1665. The monument was built in 1668 at the orders of D. António Luís de Menezes, Marquis of Marialva and Count of Cantanhede, who led had the Portuguese troops. Built using the white marble that is typical of the region, the monument is surmounted by a closed royal crown made of metal.
