Inhabited since Roman times, the attractive hillside town of Montemor-o-Velho is located beside the River Montego. Apart from the attractions separately detailed, the Gothic 12th century Igreja de São Martinho, the Renaissance Capela de São Sebastião and the 16th century Igreja da Misericórdia are of interest, as is the 16th century Manueline Anjos fountain. Fernão Mendes Pinto (1510-83), the eastern explorer and colourful writer was born in Montemor-o-Velho. The Paúl do Taipal wetland near the castle is a protected area and winter home to a number of duck species, as well being a nesting area for herons.
