The Montemor-o-Velho Castle complex consisted of a 16th century royal palace, the citadel and keep, the Porta da Peste, and the Santa Maria da Alcáçova Church (see separate entry). The castle was the biggest in the Mondego River region and primarily intended for the defence of Coimbra. The restored remains of the citadel seen today are from the 14th century, although there are elements of Roman stonework in the keep and it had previously been a Roman and a Moorish stronghold. It last saw battle in 1808 when students from the University of Coimbra repulsed a French army.
