Montemor-o-Novo, birthplace of St John of God (1495-1550), patron saint of the sick lies 30 km northwest of Évora. The town was first fortified by the Romans and then by the Moors, whose ruler Al-Mansur is remembered in the name of the nearby River Almançor. The town received its first charter in 1203 during the reign of King Sancho I. Montemor-o-Novo castle is where Vasco da Gama finalised plans for his sea voyage to India. Montemor-o-Novo is distinguished by beautiful 17th century manor houses, many convents and churches displaying Manueline doorways, Baroque altars and outstanding frescos and tiles.
