When you have finished a visit to the attractions of Monte, an exciting and unique way to return to Funchal is to take a traditional two seater toboggan from outside the church. These wicker basket sledges have been used since about 1850. They are mounted on wooden runners, are pushed from the rear, and steered by two toboggan drivers dressed in white clothes with straw hats. Using their rubber-soled boots as brakes, they propel you in your cushioned seats at speed, but safely, for the 10 minute trip down; an experience described by Ernest Hemmingway as ‘Exhilarating’.
