The Monte Municipal garden, also known as Leite Monteiro, covers an area of about 26 acres and is stocked with shady trees and indigenous and exotic plant species. The stream which runs through the gardens has a waterfall at one end. There is a bandstand near the entrance and a marble Fonte da Virgem which contains an image of Nossa Senhora do Monte. Other features are the lake with a central island in the shape of Madeira and the station which remained after the railway was closed in 1939. Above all, the garden is a luxuriant and tranquil place.
