Monte de Santa Luzia is 5 km north of the centre of Viana do Castelo and provides an exceptional panoramic view. The domed Basilica, completed in 1926, is modelled on the Sacré Coeur in Paris and is a place of pilgrimage approached by a monumental stairway. The interior lit by three rose windows is notable for its frescoes. Nearby there are traces of a Celtic settlement (see separate entry) and near the top of the hill is the Pousada de Santa Luzia. The site can be reached by car or funicular and for hardy types, on foot; the steps start behind the station.
