The Monte Alto Santuary is located about 3 km east of Arganil, at a height of some 500 metres. The original Carmelite sanctuary was built in 1521 on the orders of Francisco Pires of Arganil, but the present building dates from 1796. The features include a number of important chapels on the access to the sanctuary, a 15th century limestone statue of Santa Luzia and an 18th century wooden carving of Santa Ana. In the Senhor da Ladeira chapel there is a curious, fully dressed figure of child Christ in a bicorne hat, which comes out for festivals.
