Montargil, idyllically placed in the heart of the northern Alentejo, is a small village dating back to the golden age of medieval Portugal. Situated next to the large dam of the same name, Montargil was founded in 1315 by King Dinis. Prominent as the highest point in town, the parish church has a beautiful interior featuring azuelo tiling and a 16th century wooden figure of Saint Peter. The nearby Chapel of Santo António dates back to 1713. Visitors will enjoy the traditional market that takes place on the first Sunday of each month.
