Located about 4km outside the old quarter of Sintra, the Monserrate Palace and its beautiful subtropical gardens owe their present appearance to the 19th century design of James Knowles, architect of Grosvenor House in London. William Beckford, one of England’s most notorious and wealthy eccentrics, lived here when he was exiled from England in 1787. Once owned by Sir Francis Cook, it is now the property of the state and is being renovated to become a museum. The gardens alone are well worth the visit; the Fern and Mexican valleys, chapel, lawns and the Perfumed path are all notable features.
