Monsaraz is an extremely beautiful mediaeval town. Walking through its streets is like travelling back in time to a place of peace and tranquillity completely unlike the modern era. The town is noted for the whitewash and schist of its houses and buildings. In the month of July Monsaraz becomes an open-air museum, affording visitors the opportunity to enjoy the delights of the regional cuisine and various cultural events, including music, theatre, dance and art exhibitions. The parish church of Nossa Senhora da Lagoa dates from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
