The ancient village of Monsanto is about 15 km north of Idanha-a-Velha and stretches up an extremely steep hill. It is a fascinating, unique place and in 1938 was voted ‘The most Portuguese village in Portugal’, in recognition of its authenticity. It is built around, between and underneath huge granite boulders. The steep climb up to the ruins of the castle (see separate entry) provides one of the most breathtaking views in this region of Portugal. The house of Fernando Namora, the writer and doctor, can be seen; the village provided the inspiration for his novel ‘Fragments of a Doctor’s Life’
