As part of the general strengthening of national defences, the building of Monção Castle was ordered by King Dinis (1279-1325) in 1306. Facing the Spanish across the Minho, interestingly, the castle included, amongst other things, an underground passage to the river. Later the castle was rebuilt to incorporate the Vauban star shape principles and further reinforced in the 18th century by King João V, using stone recovered from the demolition of the Lapela fortress. Today the site is an excellent viewing point and the remaining walls can be toured on foot. Two of the entrance gates remain Rosal and Salvaterra.
