Situated northeast of Chaves is the castle of Monforte de Rio Livre, built to defend the medieval village of that name. Both were abandoned in 1853 and the castle is in a bad state of repair, however you can walk around the ramparts and there is a spectacular view of the River Tâmega valley. There are only weed covered ruins of the once large village. To get there take the road north to Spain and turn off to the right to Brangança on the N103, follow the sign and the dirt road to the right about 15 km from Chaves.
