About 25 km south of Cabeceiras de Basto, is the 12th century town of Mondim de Basto which overlooks the River Tâmega, it is also in the vinho verde producing area. Founded in the reign of Dom Sancho I, it retains many traces of its history. Overlooking the town is the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça( see separate entry) at the summit of the 990 metre high Monte Farinha. The Parque Natural do Alvão lies to the east and also nearby is the village of Ermelo and the waterfalls of the Olo River, known locally as the Ermelo Catapult.
