Moncarapacho is a typical ‘Barrocal’ village. Barrocal refers to the area of the Algarve between the coast and the mountains. It is a tranquil region of orchards, fig, almond and pomegranate trees. During the 16th and 17th centuries the chapel in Moncarapacho was a place of Christian pilgrimage and this religious air is reflected in the number of hermitages in the vicinity. Moncarapacho- Pé da Cruz, Sao Francisco and Nossa Senhora do Carmo are typical of the local rural architecture. The hermitage of São Miguel, situated on a hill about 5 kilometres from Moncarapacho, offers a beautiful sweeping panorama, taking in coastline and hills.
