The St. Martin of Tibães Monastery was founded in the 6th century but nothing remains of that earlier institution. In the 11th century the monastery was rebuilt and in 1567 it became the mother house of the Benedictine order of Portugal and Brazil. The buildings we see today were built in the 17th and 18th century and such architects as Manuel Álvares and André Soares were involved, it was a truly magnificent complex. The monastery was sold by auction in 1864 and yet again fell into decay and ruin, restoration work commenced in 1986.
