The Monastery of São Francisco was constructed in the 16th century, but was severely damaged in the great earthquake of 1755 and again in a fire in 1884. Built on the edge of the Arade Estuary, facing Ferragudo, the complex would once have been an important resting place for visiting dignitaries. Although it is now abandoned the ruins are well worth visiting. The church, cloister and chapter house all display some interesting architectural features and the view across the river is both interesting and breathtaking.
