When Mogadouro became part of Portugal in the 13th century, King Dinis built a castle which he handed over to the Knights Templar; only the keep and a small portion of the citadel remain. There are fine views of the beautiful landscape from the top of this tower, particularly in February/ March during almond blossom time. Other great viewpoints are the Serra da Castanheira hilltops and the ruins of Penas Róias castle, about 12 km to the northeast. There is a 16th century parish church with a 17th century tower and lavishly gilded altarpieces. Mogadouro is known for its leather goods.
