The Grutas da Moeda (Coin Caves) are located 5 km southwest of Fátima and get their name from a legend, that robbers killed a wealthy man for his bag of coins, but by mistake threw the body complete with coins into the caves. They are from the middle Jurassic period and were discovered in 1971 by two hunters chasing a fox. Entered at an altitude of 370 metres and descending 45 metres, the caves have descriptive names such as Nativity Scene, Shepherd, Cascade, Virgin, Red Dome, Marine, Flawed Chapel, Wedding Cake and Spring of Tears. The tour lasts about 30 minute.
