Mistério da Prainha (Mystery of Prainha) originated from a volcano that formed in the ocean and attached itself to the island. The bizarre formation, born of several volcanic eruptions, solidified as the lava cooled and the gas that escaped produced hollows. Over time these became caves adorned with stalactites and stalagmites. There are long volcanic passages that penetrate deep underground. It is possible to traverse these passages with adequate equipment and in company of a guide – an exciting experience, but not suitable for anyone who suffers from claustrophobia.
