The original Misericórdia Church was built in the late 16th century next to a hospice founded earlier in that century. In the mid 18th century the façade was rebuilt to the imposing design by the celebrated Nicolau Nasoni. The high altar remains from the original building, but the most prized possession is the ‘Fountain of Life’, which was the gift of Manuel I in the early 16th century, and shows the crucified Christ with the king and his family kneeling before him.
