Opposite the Cathedral and the Grão Vasco Museum and in complete contrast to their austerity, is the Misericórdia Church with its elegant 18th century Rococo façade. A broad flight of steps leads to the Baroque portico which has an exquisite balcony veranda above. Granite columns stand out against the white walls and the richly decorated windows and twin towers complete the symmetry of the whole. The interior is Neo-Classical and features three white and gold painted altars and the statue on the main altarpiece of Our Lady of Mercy, seated on a throne with two kneeling supplicants at her feet.
