Work on the construction of the Misericórdia Church commenced in 1532 on the orders of Pedro de Castro, who was also responsible for founding the church of São Pedro in the city. Inside there is a single tiled nave and seven valuable oil paintings. The church is perhaps best known for the tomb of José Custódio, referred to as the Holy or Sainted Soldier. He was shot early in the 19th century, in what was discovered later to be a miscarriage of justice and is now a figure of veneration.
