The Misericórdia Church was built in the 16th century; it has a plain exterior with a simply decorated portal. Although the church has a single nave, it is unusual in that it has granite staircases in the middle of the church, leading to two side galleries with pulpits. The beautiful delicately carved octagonal granite Renaissance pulpit is an interesting feature, as is the valuable 18th century richly carved and gilded wood retable of the high altar. There is a more modest carved and painted retable in a side chapel. The building was at one stage used as a women’s prison.
