The Church of Misericórdia was completed in 1566, as confirmed by an inscription above the entrance, and is famous for its rich 17th century azulejo tiling; the use of a flower vase motif is unusual. The 18th century carved wooden altar is worthy of note. Father Jerónimo de Brito left his entire estate to the church and his tomb is built into the south wall. The carved wooden altar is also worth seeing. This church is an example of the Portuguese style of architecture known as estilo chão and stands next to the 17th century Misericórdia hospital.
