Although the Order of Our Lady of Mercy was founded in Monção in 1590, the Misericórdia church dates from the 17th century. It has both Mannerist and Baroque features, with its combination of granite and white walls; above the portal there is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Inside, the baroque carved gilt finishings to the main altar and the panelled painted ceiling, depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin, command one’s attention. The attached House of Consistório was the meeting place of the cardinal’s assembly.
