Situated in the historic centre of Leiria, the Misericórdia de Leiria took over all the existing hospitals, hospices and the leper asylum in Leiria, when it was founded in 1544. Its headquarters was in the old Jewish quarter and the hospital annexe, built between 1627 and 1636, operated until 1880. The church seen today was rebuilt in the 18th century by Bishop Álvaro de Abranches e Noronha. It is a single nave simple Mannerist style building. The church is at present used for cultural purposes and is managed by the Municipal Council.
